NC official admits impeding probe of Butterball turkey farm

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Dr. Sarah Jean Mason of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services pleaded guilty Feb. 15 in Hoke County District Court to impeding an investigation into animal cruelty at a Butterball turkey farm.

She was sentenced to 45 days in jail on two misdemeanor charges, but that sentence was suspended pending a year of probation. Also, the agriculture department suspended her for two weeks without pay.

This follows action by an animal rights group, Mercy for Animals, which used a hidden camera at the farm about 90 miles south of Raleigh. . .
