Dollar Tree stopping egg sales until later this year

Must read

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — News reports, from Reuters and other outlets, note a Dollar Tree spokesperson announcing that the business will stop sales of eggs until later this year, potentially the fall.

Egg prices have seen dramatic increases during the past year, with more than $5 a dozen seen in January. The decrease in supply has been attributed to last year’s outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza. Governmental data released in February noted a 6.7 percent decrease in egg prices.

This comes at a time when Dollar Tree notes an increase in investments in frozen and refrigerated foods.

However, the chain, which is known for its flat rate of now $1.25 per item, with some specialty items at $3 and $5, adds that it cannot offer an item that has gone beyond the price points that it offers.

Dollar Tree, which operates 8,000 stores, also operates approximately 8,200 Family Dollar stores. The Family Dollar chain offers items up to $10, and notes that it will continue to offer eggs in these stores.

In the past, the Dollar Tree stores would offer eggs in six or eight egg cartons for $1, and later for the chain’s new normal of $1.25 per item.
