WASHINGTON — Government and industry officials have assured U.S. consumers that the nation's beef products are safe and that the U.S. animal disease surveillance system works.
The statements followed confirmation from USDA that a dairy cow that died in California tested positive for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).
USDA also emphasized that the animal was never presented for slaughter for human consumption, so at no time presented a risk to the food supply or human health.
