GAINESVILLE, Ga. — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there are approximately 1.35 million salmonella cases each year, along with 26,500 hospitalizations and 420 deaths.
According to the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, food is the culprit when it comes to most salmonella infections, with 23 percent of foodborne salmonella cases caused by eating chicken and turkey. FSIS’s testing data shows that the contamination of poultry has decreased, however this is not applicable for human illnesses. Rates of infections in humans have stayed stagnant.
