WASHINGTON — The National Chicken Council says a proposed inspection system to operate in poultry processing plants "will better protect the public from foodborne illnesses by reducing reliance on old-fashioned visual and sensory inspection.
The NCC statement was in response to a news report from ABC News which cited "whistleblower" inspectors opposed to the new USDA rule who say "companies cannot be trusted to watch over themselves."
The USDA proposal, according to the ABC report, would lay off !,000 government inspectors and turn their duties over to company monitors to staff the poultry processing lines.
