W.Va. agency moves to protect turkey operations

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state Department of Agriculture plans to limit the use of Eastern Panhandle chicken litter as fertilizer on fields near a turkey breeder's operations in the Greenbrier Valley.

The Charleston Daily Mail says agriculture officials are concerned the litter could be infected with diseases that could spread to Aviagen Turkeys' operations.

They told lawmakers at an interim committee meeting June 26 that the department plans to issue an emergency that creates a "clean zone'' around Aviagen's 22 farms in Greenbrier and Monroe counties.
