MARION, N.C. — Foothills Pilot Plant, an independent, non-profit facility for poultry and rabbit processing, has opened its doors here.
The plant will serve independent growers seeking USDA and U.S. Food & Drug Administration inspection of their meat products.
Organizers say the Foothills Pilot Plant is the only USDA-inspected facility serving independent poultry growers in the Southern Appalachian region. That means the resulting packaged meat stripped from chickens, turkeys and rabbits can be sold outside North Carolina.
