GMO labeling bill defeated in Senate

WASHINGTON — A bill which would have provided a national voluntary labeling standard for bioengineered foods has been defeated in the Senate.

The bill, introduced by Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) would have nullified state and local efforts to require makers to label products made with genetically modified organisms, or GMOs.

A procedural vote on March 16 failed to reach the necessary 60 votes to advance the bill in the Senate, with 49 yes votes and 48 no votes. . .
