PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — A 10-year-old Cambodian girl has died from the H5N1 strain of avian influenza, according to the Cambodian health ministry and the World Health Organization. This is Cambodia's third fatality from bird flu this year.
The health ministry said there is evidence of recent poultry death in the girl's village and that she had prepared sick chicken for food prior to becoming sick herself.
The girl, from southwestern Kampong Speu province is the 21st person in Cambodia to become infected with the H5N1 virus since 2003. Nineteen of those cases have been fatal.
