UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Department of Animal Science in Pennsylvania State University’s College of Agricultural Sciences recently named Mike Watkins, vice president of live operations for Bell & Evans in Fredericksburg, the recipient of its 2026 Distinguished Poultry Science Alumnus Award.
Watkins originally earned his bachelor’s degree in poultry management and technology from Penn State in 1990 and immediately joined the poultry industry after graduation, Penn State said in a statement.
For more than 30 years, Watkins has worked for multiple poultry companies, including Empire Kosher Poultry, Perdue Farms, BJE Contracting, and most recently, Bell & Evans.
“I have been very fortunate to be able to have a long career in live production,” Watkins said. “It has been a challenging and rewarding experience. The solid foundation I was provided by the University and college was the steppingstone that set me up for success.”
“I feel very humbled and proud to be receiving this award. I know many talented individuals have come through this department,” Watkins added.
Being recognized by his peers and his alma mater for what he has accomplished is a great honor, he noted as well.
“Mike has built an exceptional career through his deep knowledge of live poultry production, practical leadership and sustained commitment to the industry,” Rebecca Krisher, Penn State professor and head of the Department of Animal Science, said. “He represents what we hope to see in our graduates: strong technical preparation and the ability to grow into positions of significant leadership. His work has contributed to the continued strength and advancement of the Pennsylvania poultry industry, and his more than three decades of professional achievement reflect well on Penn State’s poultry science program.”
With all of the skills students gain from the Department of Animal Science, the poultry industry has a lot to offer them.
“The opportunities are endless for those who put the effort in,” Watkins noted. “If a young person is willing to come in, work hard and bide their time, the sky is the limit. You will truly get out of it what you put in.”
Currently, Watkins lives in Liverpool with his family. He was presented with the award on Sept. 16 at the 2026 Poultry Sales and Services Conference.
