HPAI detected in five Indiana commercial duck farms

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Indiana, one of the nation’s top duck producing states, has detected highly pathogenic avian influenza in five commercial duck flocks in the past week, according to the Indiana State Board of Animal Health.

The outbreaks, affecting more than 22,620 birds, were reported in LaGrange and Elkhart Counties. According to Indiana’s BOAH, the five locations, which have gone through the depopulation protocols, have been quarantined and are in 10 km control areas, with a 20 km surveillance zone.

The locations and numbers include:

· Oct. 9: Commercial breeder duck farm, LaGrange County; flock size, 2,617.

· Oct. 10: Commercial meat duck farm, Elkhart County, flock size, 3,500.

· Oct. 13: Commercial meat duck farm, Elkhart County, flock size, 6,755.

· Oct. 13: Commercial breeder duck developer, LaGrange County, flock size, 5,755.

· Oct. 13: Commercial breeder duck farm, LaGrange County, flock size, 3,994.

Since this current outbreak of HPAI began in 2022, the BOAH adds that Indiana has lost 8,183,066 commercial egg layers; 351,360 commercial turkeys; 45,545 commercial ducks; and 1,145 non-commercial birds; for a total of 8,579,116.
