INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The current highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak continues to worsen in Indiana as three more cases of the disease have been detected in the state. All three cases were at commercial egg layer farms in LaGrange County, the Indiana Board of Animal Health reported.

The first case was on Oct. 19, and more than 19,000 birds were affected. The second case was on Oct. 25, and more than 19,000 birds were affected, as well. The most recent case was on Oct. 27, and more than 23,000 birds were affected. In total, more than 60,000 birds have been affected by these recent cases.

All three farms have been quarantined with the control and surveillance areas activated. The affected birds have also been depopulated, Indiana BOAH reported.

With these cases, there have been a total of six bird flu cases in LaGrange County just this month. For Indiana, there have been a total of eight cases in the entire state this month.

Before October, Indiana had been HPAI-free since May. The last case was reported on April 30 in Jay County.
