LEWISBURG, W.Va. — Aviagen Turkeys Inc. has announced that Dr. Dustin Burch has joined the company as poultry veterinarian. In this role Burch will implement and oversee company poultry health programs. He will be based in Lewisburg, W.Va., and report to Dr. Bob Edson, Aviagen Turkeys vice president of poultry health.
Burch earned his bachelor of science degree in animal and poultry science in 2010 from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and has recently completed his doctor of veterinary medicine at Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, Virginia Tech. He will complete his master of public health from Virginia Tech by the end of the year.
While pursuing his poultry science degree, Burch worked as a poultry care technician at Virginia Tech. He has also worked with the Maryland Department of Agriculture as an agricultural inspector and administrative specialist, where he gained experience conducting welfare audits for egg producing chickens. As part of his DVM, Burch worked several veterinary externships including three weeks with Aviagen Turkeys.
“Dr. Burch is a strong addition to our team,” Edson said. “He has a solid education in veterinary science, an understanding of the importance of animal welfare and auditing as well as a history of working with poultry. We were very impressed with his work when he was here completing his externship and are very pleased that he decided to join the company.”
