Bolivia rejects Gates’ offer of chickens

LA PAZ, Bolivia — The Bolivian government has rejected  Bill Gates' offer to donate chickens as part of a program to help ease poverty in rural families, according to press reports.

"How can he think we are living 500 years ago, in the middle ofthe jungle not knowing how to produce?" asked Bolivian development minister CĂ©sar Cocarico.

Gates is working with Heifer International to donate 100,000 chickens to countries with high poverty levels, mainly in sub-Sahara Africa.

Bolivia currently produces 197 million chickens annually and has the capacity to export 36 million, according to the local poultry producing. . .
