ARLINGTON, Va. — Michael Schumpp has been promoted to the Meat Institute role of vice president of international affairs. Schumpp has worked with the group in legislative and public affairs having just previously served as the Institute’s senior director of international affairs.
In new actions, he testified before the House Committee on Agriculture urging Congress to preserves the USMCA trade deal between the United States, Mexico and Canada, to avoid any trade disruptions that could be caused by the deal’s renegotiations.
“Michael recently delivered compelling testimony in representing the Meat Institute before Congress and has assisted the U.S. Trade Representative in negotiations on the (USMCA),” Julie Anna Potts, Meat Institute president and CEO, said in the announcement. “His leadership on international policy is well established, his industry expertise is sought out by policymakers, and we are pleased he will continue his work on behalf of the meat and poultry industry as vice president.”
To assist with U.S. meat and poultry trade, his tasks with the Meat Institute involve providing technical and strategic expertise to government officials and international partners on specific aspects affecting protein commerce. He has also worked to increase market access through participation in trade missions to Asia, Africa and the Americas.
Schumpp holds a master’s degree in political management, and a bachelor’s degree in political science from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He is also a member of the USDA’s Technical Advisory Committee for Animals and Animal Products.
