Ethanol exports become a two-way street

WASHINGTON — Federal and state policies could result in the U.S. importing significant volumes of sugarcane ethanol from Brazil at the same time it continues to export corn-based ethanol to Brazil and other countries, according to a report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

The Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), enacted as part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and subsequently strengthened by the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, established mandates for renewable fuel use in the transportation sector.
