WASHINGTON — The U.S. broiler meat production estimate for third-quarter 2012 was reduced by 50 million pounds to 9.3 billion pounds, down 3 percent from the previous year, according to the latest "Livestock, Dairy and Poultry Outlook" from USDA's Economic Research Service.
During the last five weeks, an average of 162 million broiler chicks was placed weekly for growout, about even with the previous year.
Turkey meat production in July 2012 was 497 million pounds, 11 percent higher than last July, as both the number of turkeys slaughtered and their average weights were higher.
