AUSTIN, Minn. — In its continuing efforts to increase its protein category presence, Hormel Foods announces that it has entered a definitive agreement to acquire Brakebush Brothers LLC from the Brakebush family for $1.055 billion.

Hormel noted in its announcement that it expects the deal, subject to all customary closing requirements and regulatory approval, to close by its first quarter 2027.

Brakebush Brothers, founded in 1925 in Wakefield, Wis., is a non-vertically integrated chicken producer that provides value-added chicken items to foodservice customers nationwide. Brakebush operates five production facilities, as well as two research and development labs across the U.S. The company reported approximately $1.2 billion in sales during the past year.

“Brakebush is a highly respected leader in value-added chicken and has earned the trust of customers for more than 100 years through innovation, quality and exceptional relationships,” Jeff Ettinger, Hormel Foods interim CEO, said in a statement. “The company’s talented team, strong culture and differentiated capabilities make it an excellent fit for Hormel Foods. Our industry-leading Foodservice business has been a source of growth, and we are excited to meaningfully expand our presence in value-added chicken.”
“Brakebush has always been a people-first company, built on strong relationships, shared values and a commitment to doing business the right way,” Carey Brakebush, Brakebush Brothers chairman of the board, said. “We see those same qualities in Hormel Foods. Their culture, integrity and long-term approach to growth give us great confidence that Brakebush will continue to thrive for our employees, customers and communities in the years ahead.”

Hormel added that this acquisition fits with its current strategy to enhance and expand its protein and foodservice businesses, particularly offering more value-added chicken products.

“Chicken has been one of the most attractive growth categories in protein, and Brakebush has built and exceptional platform to serve that demand,” John Ghingo, Hormel Foods president and CEO-elect., said. Ghingo becomes Hormel Foods CEO on Oct. 26.
“Hormel Foods has built a strong Foodservice business by helping operators succeed through innovation, service and value-added solutions,” he added. “We believe that Brakebush will bolster our capabilities, bringing additional scale, expertise and customer reach, in support of our long-term growth strategy.”
