Companies to donate more than 150,000 pounds of turkey
WASHINGTON — June is Turkey Lovers’ Month® and this year those who grow and produce turkeys are coordinating to give back to their local communities. Today, June 15, is the inaugural “Turkey Day of Service” when members of the National Turkey Federation are making donations of food, money and volunteering their time to help reduce food insecurity. In total, more than 150,000 pounds of turkey are being donated to 18 organizations in12 states.
“We want people to enjoy turkey all year round and to that end our members are giving to local communities, making donations, and helping prepare meals,” said Joel Brandenberger, National Turkey Federation president. “We’re proud of the generosity of our industry as we raise awareness and encourage others to join in the effort to end hunger by starting with their local communities.”
Participating organizations include: Bruhn Farms Inc.; Butterball LLC; Cargill; Circle S Ranch; Dakota Provisions LLC; Farbest Foods; Jennie-O Turkey Store; Hybrid Turkey; Prestage Foods Inc.; Protein Alliance Inc.; South Dakota Poultry Industries Associations; and West Liberty Foods LLC.
With 42 million Americans struggling to find their next meal, Turkey Day of Service is an annual commitment to support the communities that are home to those who grow and produce turkey, NTF noted.
