Essential oils may reduce antibiotic use in poultry

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — The animal food industry, including the poultry industry, has lately come under increased pressure to abolish use of antibiotics.

Antibiotics have been added to poultry feed or water as a means to inhibit diseases and also to promote growth.

However, an increased use of antibiotics has led to "superbugs" that are becoming increasingly resistant to the antibiotics that are used to treat not only farm animals but humans as well.

This has led to the call to ban antibiotics in animals.
