INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Approximately a year after opening its new global headquarters in downtown Indianapolis, Ind., within its One Health Innovation District, Elanco Animal Health recently held a groundbreaking announcing its new One Health Research Institute that will be anchored by Elanco with partnership with Purdue University.
This new 150,000 square foot shared-use research facility will be a hub for innovation supporting animal health and veterinary partnerships, and utilizing modern research equipment, collaboration spaces, diagnostics, and laboratories.
Elanco notes that Purdue University, based in West Lafayette, Ind., will be the research institute’s academic anchor and will make connections with faculty, students and researchers, along with industry partners to produce and develop animal health solutions. Purdue University is also classified as an R1 university, which applies to its very high level of research activity.
“Just one year after Elanco opened our new global headquarters within the One Health Innovation District, today is an exciting milestone in our vision to create a collaborative destination for innovators,” Jeff Simmons, Elanco president and CEO, said in a statement. “When you combine the R1 University capabilities of Purdue with the industry expertise we have across all sectors of One Health — Indianapolis is better positioned than ever to deliver best-in-class innovations across animal, human and plant health with unprecedented speed and scale.”
“The One Health Innovation District fits squarely into both Purdue’s historic land-grant mission and our present-day position as the state’s research and technology flagship university,” Mitch Daniels, Purdue University interim president said in a statement. “And it represents the next big step in expanding Purdue’s presence in Indianapolis and contribution to Indiana’s economic vitality.”
This new building, which is adjacent to the Elanco headquarters, “… is designed to bring researchers, clinicians, industry partners and entrepreneurs together to help accelerate the translation of discoveries into new therapeutics, diagnostics, digital health solutions, sustainable agricultural technologies and commercial products,” Elanco said its release.
This new institute will also provide space for more companies, researchers and collaborators to locate there and take part in the facility’s innovation offerings, Elanco added.
“The District is already attracting strong interest from companies seeking to establish a presence alongside Purdue and Elanco, with multiple memoranda of understanding signed,” the company said. “Individual company announcements will follow as plans are finalized.”
