ATHENS, Ga. — On Nov. 12-14, the University of Georgia Department of Poultry Science will be conducting at Cold Weather Management Workshop at the Oconee County Civic Center in Watkinsville, Ga., which is just a few miles from the UGA campus.
This intensive program has been specifically designed for those who want to learn more about the design and management of modern poultry houses. The workshop consists of lectures, as well as hands-on group exercises designed to help attendees gain a firm understanding of the principles behind cold weather poultry house management, organizers noted.
A webinar has also been established for industry personnel that wish to participate in the workshop online. During the workshop, webinar participants will be able to hear and see the presenters, participate with questions and see any visuals that are presented.
Workshop topics will include:
- House temperature and broiler performance
- Determining broiler house heating system requirements
- Poultry house tightness
- Insulation installation tips
- Cold weather nutrition
- Poultry house heating systems
- Air quality and bird health (respiratory)
- Ventilating poultry houses during cold weather
- Negative pressure ventilation systems
- Litter quality, management and bird welfare
- Circulation fan systems
- Basic air inlet management
- Brooding 101
- Attic inlets
- Poultry house environmental assessment
- Operating poultry houses during cold weather
Workshop presenters will include: Mike Czarick, Extension engineer; Dr. Brian Fairchild, Extension poultry scientist; Dr. Justin Fowler, Extension nutritionist; Dr. Brian Jordan, assistant professor; Connie Mau, UGA doctoral candidate; Brantley Porter, Porter Insulation Products Inc.; and Dr. John Worley, Emeritus Extension.
The workshop will begin at 8 a.m. on Nov. 12, and end at noon on Nov. 14.
