Brazil reports its first commercial poultry bird flu outbreak

SAO PAULO — Brazil has confirmed its first case of avian influenza on a commercial poultry farm. Brazil is the largest chicken meat exporter in the world and the second largest producer of chicken meat.

The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) on May 15 confirmed the detection of highly pathogenic avian influenza at a commercial poultry breeder farm in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in the Montenegro municipality.

MAPA adds that it has begun its contingency plan of culling the birds and monitoring in the area, and notification has been sent to the World Organization for Animal. . .
