Legislation avoids furloughs for meat and poultry inspectors

WASHINGTON — Agricultural groups welcomed action by the U.S. Congress which passed a Continuing Resolution to fund the government for six months and contained an amendment to avoid furloughs for USDA meat and poultry plant inspectors.

The Senate passed the bill March 20 on a73 to 26 vote. The House bill passed March 21 on 318-109 vote.

Furloughs of inspectors were scheduled to begin in July as part of an across-the-board sequestration bill to cut $85 billion in federal spending.
