FITCHBURG, Wis. — Intermodal is the transfer of products involving multiple modes of transportation — truck, railroad or ocean carrier. The North American railroads move more than 16 million containers, or 40 percent, of U.S. freight each year and are growing faster than any other mode of transportation.

In the United States, railroads are categorized as Class I, II, or III. There are seven Class I railroads in the U.S. accounting for 69 percent of the rail mileage. Intermodal increased 33 percent between 1998 and 2008 due to rising fuel costs. . .
