WASHINGTON — A diverse group of food and agriculture organizations has called on the Joint Committee on Deficit Reduction to avoid imposing new food taxes or user fees on consumers and food makers.
The committee — also known as the Super Committee — is charged with cutting $1.5 trillion from future federal spending. Among the issues the committee will examine is the administration's proposed 2012 budget, which calls for collection of these fees in 2013 and beyond to support implementation of the Food & Drug Administration Food Safety Modernization Act.
